The side of Wunsche Brothers today, after a fire ravaged the building. Author’s collection.

On some nights, you can still hear the footsteps and clanking noises Uncle Charlie makes at his saloon and hotel. You can hear him moving from room to room, going up and down the stairs or rocking in his chair. Some have seen him looking out of the windows or sitting on the upper porch. Staff members would rearrange furniture or equipment before closing, then Uncle Charlie would start acting up because he didn’t like change of any kind. He would move things around, lock doors and knock over tables or chairs. Items would become lost, and workers thought he took them. But the items would turn up in unexplained places. Anytime remodeling or construction was going on, the activity would escalate. Coffee machines were said to start and stop on their own, nozzles for the soft drink dispensers would disappear and then reappear later, unlocked doors would feel as though they were being held by someone on the other side, chairs would rattle and move about and strange shadows would move in the hallway upstairs.

One sighting was by a former waitress named Ilona Langlinais in 1984. Ilona was carrying a fresh pot of coffee in the upstairs hallway when she noticed an older gentleman dressed in a dark suit and a hat sitting alone at a table off to the side. After walking over to the man, she asked, “Would you like a cup of hot coffee?” He promptly disappeared, with a chilling wind sweeping around her. Another staff member thought she saw him one night as she was walking to her car. She looked back at the building, and when she looked up to where the liquor room used to be on the second floor, she saw what looked like a shadowy figure of a man staring out the window at her. People would notice the chair upstairs rocking on its own. Jana Beck told me about an experience she had here:

The very first time I ate at the Wunsche Café, I was pregnant with Alex. Walking in there, it’s a feeling of energy like you never felt in your life, it’s almost like walking back in time. There weren’t many people there as it was a late lunch and the first thing I had to do was go to the bathroom. I was the only one in the bathroom at the time. I never heard anyone else come in, but when I was going I kept getting the feeling that I was being watched. Then I heard the stall next to me open and slam shut, and that was it for me! I just wanted to get out of there and back into the main room. I quickly washed my hands, because the hair on the back of my neck was standing up and it felt like someone was breathing on me. When I got out of there, I sat down at the table, shaking.
